In an example of how the American justice system should work, 11-year-old Trevor Dennis and his mother, Alysha Reed, are going to trial in a defective product case against The Coleman Co.

Trevor suffered from serious burns after a ProCat heater caught fire in the family’s camping equipment trailer. Reports show that Coleman had received complaints and warranty claims and knew about other fires, but continued to put the product on retail shelves anyway.

Calcagno was in serious condition at Legacy Emanuel Hospital as of October 30.

Two women who had crashed their truck and were waiting for help on Highway 26 in Portland, Oregon, were struck by a car that lost control as it exited the Vista Ridge Tunnel, October 21, 2009.

Caprice Miller, 20, and Jessica Kvidera, 19, were heading to the Oregon Zoo when their truck crashed into a barrier near the tunnel. They steered to the right shoulder and called for help.

As the pair waited by the highway, Fabian Fertig, 26, exited the tunnel and lost control of his car. He crashed into them at around 10:30 AM.

Both women were injured, and they were transported to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital for treatment.

Fettig was charged with careless driving.

According to the Oregon Driver Manual 2007-2009, a person commits the offense of careless driving if he or she causes serious injury or death to a “vulnerable” person on a roadway, such as a pedestrian, bicyclist, or highway worker. We all share the road, and it is important to treat everyone with respect – but especially those who do not have the protection of being inside a car.

Halloween is a time for scary stories, and often it’s the grownups getting spooked. Parents hear warnings about stranger danger, razor blades, and LSD in candy bags. There’s even a scientific study on eye injuries from throwing raw eggs. Some folks worry about black cats. But the real danger on Halloween night is one so ordinary it could go unnoticed: motor vehicle traffic.

And in 2009, the danger from car-pedestrian accidents could be higher than ever, because the holiday falls on a Saturday. According to the University of Michigan News Service, children under 15 are 4.5 times more likely to die in a car crash on Halloween than on any other evening of the year, with most deaths occurring between 4 PM and 8 PM – prime trick-or-treating time.
