According to reports from KGW.com, a dump truck driver traveling on S Maple Lane Road in Oregon City, Oregon, March 15, 2010, lost control of his truck, crashing into a guardrail and hurtling off a bridge into Abernathy Creek.
Witnesses rushed to help, and were able to pull Steve Oberson, 47, of Oregon City, out of the wreckage just as the cab of the truck was filling with water.
Oberson was airlifted to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital in critical condition. As of March 16, his condition was upgraded to serious. He remained in intensive care.
While crews assess the integrity of the bridge, S. Maple Lane Road will be closed to all traffic between S. Fergusson Road and S. Waldo Road for an unknown period of time.
Oberman told police his brakes went out, causing him to lose control. No citations were issued, and Oberman was wearing a seat belt.
