The Dangers of Speeding
Portland Speeding Accident Lawyers
Portland injury attorneys at Shulman DuBois don't want your business! We only get clients who are injured, and part of our duty is to keep you safe. You may be surprised to hear that the no. 1 reason for Oregon traffic fatalities is not alcohol.
It's speeding.
Why do we speed? To get somewhere quicker? Shaving a few minutes off your trip is not worth the risk of potentially harming or killing another innocent driver or passenger. For the thrill? Think about the child whose life you may end for that thrill.
It seems like common knowledge that speeding endangers lives, but in 2008, speed-related crashes outnumbered accidents by drunk-drivers. the Oregon Department of Transportation's Safety Division reports that 216 Oregonians lost their lives in speed-related accidents last year. Many of these people were innocent victims of other people's carelessness.
Most chronic speeders believe they can maintain control of their vehicle, but it's just not true. It's like 90% of people thinking they're above average. Speeding greatly reduces a car's capacity to maneuver around curves and debris in the road, making an automobile more apt to swerve. Safety equipment for a car is routinely tested at 35 mph, but beyond that criteria such equipment is less prone to function at its optimum level. Not only that, but the chances of an accident increase by 400 percent for every 10 mph over 50 mph, a driver goes.
As always law enforcement is in full effect. The Oregon State Police are continually looking for ways to both protect the innocent and punish those who endanger lives. These days speeding can be caught by new technology such as laser calculation systems that track the rate a car is going and its proximity to other cars. Once caught, you could lose your license, receive an expensive ticket or go to jail. Those who go 30 mph or more over the limit can receive a 30-day suspension and a ticket of $679. Others who chose to go over 100 mph may be fined $1,103, and 30 to 90 day license suspension.
The risk is too great—lives can be lost as well as licenses and the ability to operate your own vehicle. It’s not worth it.
